    Why

From The Fete To The Future

DMANLYRICS in his orange jacket presenting a $500 Scholarship Fund cheque to a smiling graduate

For years, the Annual Soca Fete has brought our Caribbean family in Houston and Baytown together. We dance, we sing, we look after each other. This fund is that same spirit, pointed at something that lasts.

College is expensive, and for a lot of our young people, a few hundred dollars is the difference between starting and waiting another year. Books, fees, a laptop, a bus pass. Small things that stop big dreams.

So we're starting small and starting now. Our first goal is $500 for one student heading to college or trade school. Every dollar raised goes straight to that student's education. When we reach it, we'll do it again, and we'll keep growing it together.

“Nobody makes it alone. Not on the road, and not in life.”

    Our promise

    Where The Money Goes

    1. 01

100% goes to the student's education. The award is paid straight to the school for tuition, fees or books.

    2. 02

The fund is kept in its own separate account, apart from any music or event money.

    3. 03

We'll post updates right here: what we've raised, and who we were able to help, with their permission.

      FAQ

      Questions

      Is my donation tax-deductible?

Not at this time. The fund is a community effort, not a registered charity. If that changes, we'll update this page.

      How is the student chosen?

Applications will ask about the student's goals and plans. A small panel from the community will review them, and the award is paid directly to the student's school.

      Can I give monthly?

Yes. PayPal lets you set up a monthly gift when you donate.

Can my business sponsor the fund?

Yes, and we'd love that. Use the form above or email dmanlyrics.ent@gmail.com.

How will I know where the money went?

We post updates on this page, including the total raised and, with their permission, the student we helped.

      The story

      About

      Portrait of Don Forde, DMANLYRICS

      Don Forde

“If they can't hear me at the back, I'm not done singing yet.”

Don Forde grew up in Trinidad with calypso tents on one side of the road and steelpan yards on the other. By his teens he was singing in community shows across the island, and people noticed one thing first: the voice. Big, clear and built to carry over a full brass section without a microphone.

He brought that voice to Texas, settling in Baytown and becoming DMANLYRICS, a name that now means sweet calypso melodies with soca energy underneath. His songs, including “Juk Harder” and “Send It Up”, are written for the road and the dance floor, but they carry the storytelling of the calypso greats he grew up on.

Through DMANLYRICS Productions he also built the Annual Soca Fete, a yearly night that brings the Caribbean community of Houston and Baytown together with live bands and international guest artists. Four years in, it has become the fete people plan their year around.
